Vanessa is a new nationally board-Certified Physician Assistant since 2020. She started her undergraduate studies at Santa Barbara City College where she received her Associate degree. She then attended California State University Channel Islands and completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 2015. In 2018, she began her two-year graduate studies at the University of California Davis. There she received her Master of Health Services and Physician Assistant degree in 2020 with cum laude. The graduate studies consisted of one year of vigorous didactic studies followed by clinical rotations (Family Medicine, Women’s Health, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, Cardiothoracic Surgery, and most importantly, Dermatology). She spent two weeks working with Sacramento’s leading dermatologist, Dr. Sivamani, and Dr. Chambers at Pacific Skin Institute. She learned the fundamentals of medical, cosmetic, holistic, and surgical components of dermatology. She is now a member of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistant. Currently she is undergoing a six-month Dermatology Clinical Internship with Dr. William K Wong Sr. and looking forward to caring for our Kamaʻāina and tourists alike.
Vanessa grew up in a small town in California called Tracy, which is an hour away from San Francisco. As a teenager she was very involved in extracurricular and competitive sports such as volleyball and soccer. The sportsmanship, leadership, and the love for being outdoors grew with age. In college Vanessa was on a leadership team that volunteered and cooperated to oversee a medical internship at Saint John’s Hospital for students that were considering medical programs to gain hands-on experience. She also collaborated with a team to design a curriculum and tutor elementary and middle school students to encourage them to continue further education in science and math. On top of volunteering and her studies, Vanessa managed to put herself through her undergrad by working multiple jobs. Her husband is from a hamlet called Springs located on eastern Long Island, New York. After they met in college, they would spend summers in Long Island, NY where she was a waitress at Babette’s. There, she served high-profile individuals such as Bill Clinton, Paul McCartney, and Steven Spielberg!
Growing up, Vanessa and her family would regularly visit the islands. She and her husband, Jorge, have both dreamed of moving to Hawai’i for many years. They have spent the last couple of years traveling extensively. They spent the winter of 2017 in Kauai, where they got their first real taste of the “Sense of Community and the Aloha of Hawai’i.” Now they are happy to be back enjoying the surfing, hiking, beaches, and exploring various farmer’s markets for fresh produce and local cuisine.
